Firewall coughed up a hairball, but we are back!

The pfSense firewall that helps keep our server safe from the ravening hoards that are constantly trying to overrun us decided to update itself and somehow lost all of its information about our configuration and took all of our websites down! Oh noes!

After much wailing, and gnashing of teeth, we were finally able to get through to the Lord and Master of all physical serverdom and internet connections, one known only as… Dave.
Dearest Dave wove his magical incarnations, waved a chicken leg over it, retyped 50+ NAT rules, restarted NFSD (which I always get confused with NSFW… completely different) and beat the thing with a stick until it behaved.

Somewhere in there, I had to drag myself from slumber and crawl upstairs in my slippers to go and look up what our actual IP addresses were, since they had all gotten lost when the box went poof. Once we were back up, I had to restart McMyAdmin and the vanilla server. I accidentally restarted the old 1.7.2 server first… whoops! I don’t even know how this stuff is set up anymore, since Chrooke and Bob Kyle pretty much take care of it all now. (And I thank them for that so very muchly, and you all should too!)

Anyway, I now think I can proclaim with all honesty that we are actually running correctly. We weren’t down for quite an entire day, but we were getting there.

Special thanks to Dave (as always), for taking time out of his busy schedule to help us, and to “She who shall NOT be named” for calling and waking me up to take care of things when Dave finally became available.

Oh, and while I’m at it, thanks to Bloodknight2000 for making the only donations to our server fund in the last couple of years! If you like the server, maybe you could find it in your heart to make one too!

Now that the emergency is over, I might consider going back to bed…. my brain is so very hurty…

Massive DDoS attack took us down, but we have gotten around it, for now!

We have had a bunch of downtime recently, mostly due to massive DDoS attacks on the server. We have worked with an all-star squad of sysadmins and linux gurus to put measures in place to hopefully stem the tide and keep us operational.
My brother was banging on it along with fabled chiptune photographer Les Barrows of “La Vie en Photos” who was the first to lend a hand.
They helped us a great deal, but then some new issues arose and our own Chrooke picked up the torch so we could get some sleep.
We thought we had them licked, but then things were still lagging and our server owner Dave actually rolled up his sleeves and put on the latest countermeasures and found evidence of real DDoSing.

And now we are back. We’d like to say “It’s all good now”, but after the previous two times, I think we will just have to say “So far, so good!”

We are now looking into migrating our websites away from WordPress, since it seems to be a magnet for hackers and crackers of all sorts. This site shouldn’t be too hard, since only the outer pages are WordPress and there are not too many of those. Migrating the actual Rhythm Core Alpha website will be much more difficult as it has years of news postings, videos, MP3 files, etc.

Anyway, thanks to everybody who has stuck with us throughout! We are sorry for the downtime, but hope you will all continue to enjoy SoftEggLand!

Microsoft buys Mojang

Microsoft has bought Mojang, the makers of Minecraft, for $2.5 billion. We don’t know what this means for the future of Minecraft or our servers yet, but we will do our best to continue to provide a great play experience throughout the transition.

You can read about it here:

Minecraft has updated! What does this mean for SoftEggLand?

Mojang has released a new Minecraft 1.7.6, and of course all of your Minecraft clients are now complaining that SoftEggLand is still running on 1.7.2 and is not compatible. Whatever shall you do?

SoftEggLand Minecraft runs using a plugin system called “Bukkit”. This still needs to be updated to handle the latest version of Minecraft. Then, all of the plugins that we use also have to be updated. This will require some time. While we wait, the main SoftEggLand server will continue to run the previous version of Minecraft + Bukkit. This is not a problem, as your client software keeps track of earlier versions and ┬ácan be configured to run them for accessing our server.

To do this, from the “Minecraft Launcher”, select “New Profile” on the bottom left of the screen.
Where it says “Profile Name” give it a name like “1.7.5 for SoftEggLand”.
In the section marked “Version Selection” under “Use Version” select “release 1.7.5″.
Then click “Save Profile”.

On the main launcher screen, select your new profile from the “Profile:” box and press “Play”. You will now be running the old version of Minecraft and will be able to access SoftEggLand as always.

Another option is to access our “Vanilla” server at . This server is always kept up-to-date with the latest version of Minecraft, which is only possible because it runs no plugins or modifications of any kind.

This time, there is a problem in that we had to remove all of the player data in order to get it to run, because the latest version of Minecraft uses account numbers rather than user names for storage. In the future, that will allow you to change your user name, but for now it means that you’ve lost all the information about your player on the vanilla server, including your location, where you last slept (respawn), everything that you were carrying (inventory), and the contents of your ender chests. But the rest of the world is intact, so if you had a cache of stuff hidden somewhere, you can still get to it!
We have kept the old player data files, so if a method of converting them appears, we do have the data to recover. But for now, folks who played on Vanilla before will lose a bunch of things, and for that we apologize.

Please continue to enjoy playing on the SoftEggLand Minecraft Servers.
